Central Arkansas Hospital has approximately 50 individuals that volunteer their time through the medical auxiliary. Volunteers provide assistance in several areas of the facility, and they do a variety of tasks, including:
Gift shop
- Take cash and checks for purchases
- Accept payroll deductions from employees of the hospital for purchases
- Assist customers
SICU Waiting Room
- Provide coffee to patients' families
- Give support to family members who have a patient in the unit
- Provide information regarding times family members may visit patients
- Answer visitors’ questions
Atrium (front desk)
- Take visitors and patients to specified areas of the hospital
- Assist patients in wheelchairs, if needed
- Deliver flowers, mail and newspapers
- Answer visitors’ questions
- Assist departments with stuffing envelopes or other special projects as needed
Special projects
During the year, the CAH Auxiliary has special events in coordination with hospital-scheduled functions, and the proceeds are used to assist the hospital. These events include book sales, bake sales and jewelry sales. In addition, CAH Auxiliary members volunteer at the White County Fair on Senior Citizens’ and Veterans’ Day by helping serve meals. The auxiliary also provides scholarships each year to hospital employees who want to further their medical careers.
Rewards from service
By providing hours of service, volunteers soon realize how rewarding it becomes to them as individuals. They become an asset to the hospital and also make new friends. Although volunteers’ services are provided freely, they are recognized with an annual luncheon, service pins for hours of service and recognition in the local newspaper as well as the hospital and auxiliary newsletters. Most of all, volunteers are very special people because it takes a special person to be able to provide service with a smile.
How to join
To become a volunteer at CAH, two requirements must be met:
- Completion of an application, reference check and interview
- Completion of a hospital and volunteer services orientation
