Sleep Studies

POLYSOMNOGRAM (PSG):  A diagnostic study for patients who present with possible obstructive sleep apnea, periodic limb movement , myoclonus, the patient may complain of the following:

  • Loud snoring
  • Insomnia
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Morning headaches
  • Excessive kicking during sleep
  • Night sweats

POLYSOMNOGRAM with MULTIPLE SLEEP LATENCY TEST: (PSG with MSLT)

This test is to document and qualify the exact level of daytime sleepiness. MSLT is a widely accepted standard in the work-up of a patient suspected of having narcolepsy. The patient may complain of the following symptoms:

  • Awaken frequently at night
  • Sudden spells of weakness
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Inability to stay awake appropriately

CPAP TITRATION: CPAP titration is a tool for determining the appropriate level of CPAP or BiPAP for patients with:

  • Positive sleep study for obstructive sleep apnea
  • Upper airway resistance syndrome

SPLIT NIGBT/CPAP STUDY:  

This test is for patients meeting the criteria for obstructive sleep apnea early in a PSG study. CPAP or BIPAP is started and titrated on the initial night of the PSG study.

Patient Instructions:

You will spend the night in a private bedroom during your sleep study. When you arrive, a sleep technologist will take your pertinent history. The technologist will explain all of the procedures to you.  Please feel free to ask questions about the procedures at any time.

Before starting the test, small electrodes will be applied to the surface of your scalp, temples, and chin for the recording of sleep patterns. We typically also monitor air flow, heart rate and leg movements.

After monitoring devices have been removed the next day, you will be permitted to leave.

  • Please wash your hair the day of the test and then do not apply any oils or hair spray.
  • Bring your own sleeping clothes.
  • Bring all personal items for showering the next morning.
  • If you prefer, bring your own pillow.
  • Arise fairly early on the morning of your study and do not nap during the day.
  • Avoid alcohol for five days prior to the study
  • Avoid stimulants (coffee, tea chocolate, any caffeine drinks) 24 hours prior to the study
  • Eat a normal evening meal
  • Avoid large amounts of liquids after 6 p.m.
  • Continue to take all prescribed medications unless otherwise ordered by your doctor
  • Bring any medication that you will be taking the evening of and the morning after the procedure

Your sleep study will be performed at Central Arkansas Hospital; a member of the business office team will contact you to clarify any financial concerns. The sleep study will be interpreted by a physician specially trained in sleep testing. The physician will bill his services separately.
